[ARCHIVED] Celebrate Earth Day, April 22!

Earth Day April 22, 2025

The Wyandot County Recycling Center is celebrating the 55th anniversary of Earth Day with free giveaways! Residents can bring their recycling out to the drive-thru on Tuesday, April 22, from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM and receive a free gift in celebration of Earth Day, while supplies last. Gifts will include reusable grocery bags, notebooks, and items made from recycled materials.

The first Earth Day in 1970 was a nationwide demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues due to concerns over unhealthy conditions because of poor air quality and water pollution in the United States. Earth Day started the modern environmental movement, eventually leading to new laws, the formation of the EPA, and the creation of Ohio solid waste districts and recycling centers.

Today, Earth Day is celebrated globally and serves as an annual reminder to practice environmentally friendly habits to keep our communities and our world healthy and clean.  Recycling is a key component in creating a sustainable future. Recycling reduces litter and pollution, conserves natural resources, decreases energy consumption, and supports a circular economy. By supporting local recycling centers, such as the Wyandot County Recycling Center, residents help reduce their carbon footprints and provide clean recyclable materials to the recycling industry.

The Wyandot County Recycling Center accepts a wide variety of recyclables. Recyclable items include plastic (#1, #2, #5), cardboard, chipboard, paper products, books, glass, steel food cans, and aluminum.

Some recyclables are considered special items and are only accepted at the recycling center drive-thru, including appliances, electronics, scrap metal, empty aerosol cans, pots/pans, and batteries. Examples of appliances that can be recycled include washers, dryers, fridges, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, microwaves, and vacuums. Dishwashers cannot be accepted at this time. Most electronics are recyclable, including laptops, tablets, computer towers, and cell phones. Televisions and computer monitors can be recycled with a $10 fee per item.

The Wyandot County Recycling Center drive-thru is open from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, and from 8:00 AM until Noon on Saturdays. Aluminum can buy back and special item recycling are available from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and from 8:00 AM until 10:30 AM on Saturdays.
